Mobile Phone Deals

There are many advantages to having a mobile phone. Firstly, everyone else has one and it`s practically impossible to get by comfortably without one; but there are more perks than that. There are the obvious benefits such as being able to call an ambulance quickly in the event of an accident and being able to stay in touch with the people important to you, but these days mobile phones also have integrated features which can come in handy for so many other reasons.

If you want to take a photo they have a camera, need information? You can call an information service such as 118, or even look for specific details on the WAP internet. If you are feeling bored on long journeys you can even play games or listen to music on mobile phones these days. So, the benefits to having a modern mobile phone are plentiful but what about the costs?

The Recession Bites

There`s currently an international recession raging and companies everywhere are in tough competition to get our cash. Mobile phone businesses are no different. All of the major network providers and mobile manufacturers are trying to get new customers. They`re also trying to keep their existing ones. These two processes are called customer `acquisition` (acquiring customers) and customer `retention` (retaining customers.)

By knowing the way that mobile phone companies work you can get better deals out of them. The most expensive mobile phone deals are the mainstream ones. They`re advertised on billboards and there are posters for these deals in shop windows on the high-street.

They want the majority of their customers to choose these deals because this will make them the most money. However, if you pay £30 a month for your mobile phone contract but only use £10 worth of your call and text quota you`ll be throwing away £20 every single month and worryingly thousands of people do just this. `Free` contract mobile phones are paid for by this surplus, making `free` handsets incredibly expensive.

By keeping an old handset and opting for a `sim only` deal you can save literally hundreds of pounds per year because for the same call and text package you`ll have the `true` cost of the handset struck from your bill. Alternatively, you could choose a clearance phone from a company such as Carphone Warehouse. A quick browse on the website will show you £30 call and text packages with re-conditioned handsets for as little as £15 a month instead.

Good Deals

If you`re looking at mainstream deals it`s essential that you compare mobile phones, try using a comparison website. T- Mobile is offering 100 minutes and 100 texts (with handset) for £14.68 per month (for 18 months) through some online retailers. Similarly, Vodafone are offering 100 minutes and 50 texts for £20 per month. If you`re interested in o2 mobile phones, you might like the 18 month £24.47 package which offers 200 texts and 200 minutes along with the obligatory free handset.
